The Tenant Deposit Scheme came into effect in 2011. It was born out of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006 and requires all landlords to register any deposits held against new tenancies drawn up after 2nd October 2012. A Deposit Protection Certificate is sent to the tenant, agent and landlord by the scheme and the money is held for the duration of the tenancy by Safe Deposits Scotland.
